Content

This module provides students with an overview of state-of-the-art technologies in the industrial sector, which are summarized under the term "Advanced Manufacturing". In addition to additive manufacturing (AM), these technologies also include digital, AI-driven industrial solutions, thin-film coating processes (PVD) and thermal spray, for example to optimize surfaces with high-tech materials and significantly improve their functionality. The key question is always: How can innovation management in these technologies be controlled in order to generate a good return on investment? For each technology individual case studies from the real business world are dealt with. Students will receive insights into C-Level management decision processes in M&A, technological innovation and Go-to-Market approaches. In addition, one part of the lecture is dedicated to the theoretical foundations of innovation management.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing the module, students will have a broad basic knowledge of the technologies in the industrial sector that are summarized under the term "Advanced Manufacturing". They will also understand the mechanisms and processes of successful innovation management. They are able to solve industry-related problems independently using the methods they have learned and the economic knowledge they have acquired. After attending the individual lectures and studying the literature provided, students are able to analyze and evaluate issues from the field of industry. Participation in the module leads to a better understanding of industrial markets and enables students to evaluate business processes and models in the field of advanced manufacturing technologies. In addition, participation in the module enables students to deal with issues relating to industrial innovation management in a well-founded manner.

Examination

The module examination is based on a written exam (60 minutes). The written exam consists of multiple choice questions. Students have to demonstrate that they have a basic understanding of technical concepts such as additive manufacturing and digital industrial solutions as well as the fundamentals of state-of-the-art coating technologies. They also have to demonstrate a basic understanding of innovation management and control in the respective technological fields. Students show that they are able to analyze and evaluate issues relevant to industry or innovation and current developments on the industrial markets. They show that they can evaluate business processes and models in the field of advanced manufacturing technologies. Rules and regulations governing the structure and grading of the exam can be found in the General Academic and Examination Regulations for Bachelor's and Master's Programs (APSO) paragraphs 12 and 12a.
